Common Installation Issues

Last Update: February 4, 2026

Installing a WordPress theme is usually straightforward, but server settings, file limitations, or configuration issues can sometimes get in the way. When an installation doesn’t go as planned, understanding the most common causes can save you time and frustration.

This troubleshooting guide covers the typical WordPress and Avada installation problems users encounter and explains how to resolve them, helping you get your site set up quickly and with confidence.

  • Uploading the wrong ZIP file: Make sure you upload only the installable theme ZIP. If you downloaded a full package from a marketplace, unzip it first, then upload the theme-specific ZIP file inside.
  • File size upload limits too low: Increase the maximum upload size through your hosting control panel, PHP settings, or by editing php.ini, .htaccess, or wp-config.php. If that’s not possible, install the theme via FTP.
  • PHP memory limit or time limit errors: Raise the PHP memory limit and max execution time through your server settings or hosting panel. Many themes require higher limits to install and run properly.

  • “Missing stylesheet.css” error: This usually means the wrong file was uploaded. Double-check that the ZIP contains a style.css file at its root and that you’re uploading the actual theme, not a documentation or package folder.

  • Insufficient file permissions: Ensure your wp-content, themes, and uploads folders have correct permissions (typically 755 for folders and 644 for files). Your host can help adjust these if needed.

  • Server timeouts or white screen during install: Increase PHP time limits and memory, disable other plugins temporarily, and try installing the theme via FTP to avoid browser-based timeouts.

  • Incompatible PHP version: Check the theme’s recommended PHP version and update or switch to a supported release in your web hosting control panel.

  • Plugin dependency issues: Install and activate required plugins one at a time. If a plugin fails, verify PHP limits and version compatibility, then retry or install it manually.

  • Corrupt or incomplete downloads: Re-download the theme from the original source to ensure all files are intact, then upload again using a stable internet connection.

  • Security or firewall restrictions blocking uploads: Temporarily disable security plugins, server firewalls, or mod_security rules during installation, then re-enable them once the theme is installed.
